Body Shapes: Comparing Apples to……Pears
Research has discovered that the area of the body where most of a person’s fat is stored is an excellent indicator of potential health risks. People with a pearshape primarily carry most of their body fat inthe lower half of the body. Apple shape body types tend to carry most of their body fat in the upper portion of the body (usually around the waist or in the abdomen area). Research has determined that women with this body type are at a higher risk for breast cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Yale University conducted a research study of 59 women and determined that women carrying more belly fat secrete more of the hormone known as cortisol when they are placed in highly stressful situations. Additionally, researchers discovered that cortisol may activate an enzyme that allows fat cells to increase in size. If this is the case, the outcome will lead to more weight gain in the abdomen! For emotional eaters, this is extremely important to note. Of course, we have heard that stress can lead to weight gain, but this research gives us insight on how this actually occurs. Following basic stress relief techniques can help tremendously. After all, stress and depression are two common emotions that lead to overeating.
